Onderscheiden oorlogsfotograaf, auteur en antropoloog
Teun Voeten studeerde culturele antropologie en filosofie aan de Rijksuniversiteit Leiden waarna hij zich als fotograaf en journalist toelegde op conflictgebieden. Hij maakte reportages in het Ex-Joegoslavië, Tsjetsjenië, Rwanda, Soedan, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Afghanistan, Irak, Libanon, de Gaza strook, Honduras, DR Kongo en Mexico. Zijn werk werd gepubliceerd in Vanity Fair, NY Times, Newsweek, National Geographic, De Morgen, Knack, De Standaard, NRC en Vrij Nederland. Ook levert hij regelmatig bijdrages aan het Internationale Rode Kruis, UNHCR, UNFPA, Artsen zonder Grenzen en Human Rights Watch.
Voeten is auteur van twee boeken: 'Tunnelmensen', Atlas 1996, een journalistiek/antropologische verslag van een ondergrondse kolonie daklozen in New York. September 2010 verschijnt de vertaalde en geactualiseerde versie in de Verenigde Staten. In 1999 verscheen zijn fotoboek 'A Ticket To' (Veenman) met het geruchtmakende en nog steeds veel geciteerde essay 'Neo-Vulturisme in Contemporaine Documentaire Fotografie'.
In 2000 publiceerde Voeten bij Meulenhoff 'How de Body? Hoop en Horror in Sierra Leone', een verslag van een bijna fatale missie en de burgeroorlog in dit Afrikaanse land, dat in 2003 ook verscheen in een Amerikaanse vertaling. Voeten, die regelmatig onderscheiden werd voor zijn werk woont afwisselend in New York en Brussel. Momenteel werkt Voeten aan een fotoboek over het drugsgeweld in Mexico.

Hoop en horror in Sierra Leone
In 1998 raakte journalist/fotograaf Teun Voeten schijnbaar spoorloos vermist in het door oorlog geteisterde Sierra Leone. Er werd gevreesd voor zi)n leven, tot hij na enkele weken weer opdook uit de bush waar hij zich schuil had moeten houden voor moordzuchtige rebellen en kindsoldaten. In How de body? Hoop en horror in Sierra Leone verhaalt Teun Voeten niet alleen over zijn eigen belevenissen; hij wil laten zien hoe mensen zich handhaven in een door oorlog verscheurd land. De lokale BBc-reporter Eddy, het dappere schoolhoofd Alfred en zijn gezin, de onvermoeibare padre Victor en niet te vergeten de kindrebellen die hem bijna het leven benamen - hei zijn de hoofdfiguren in een spannend en bij tijden hilarisch verhaal waarin zichtbaar wordt dat oorlog niet alleen het wreedste, maar ook het mooiste in de mens naar boven brengt. Teun Voetenis antropoloog en fotograaf. De laatste tien jaar werkte hij in conflictgebieden over de hele wereld, waaronder Bosnië, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Colombia en Sierra Leone.

Since 1991, Voeten has photographed conflict zones all over the world. Images from Bosnia, Sudan, Rwanda, Sierra Leone and Afghanistan appear in A Ticket To, his first photo book. Media professor Henri Beunders wrote the intro, Voeten wrote Neo-Vulturisme in Contemporary Documentary Photography. Or: Do You Remember Goma?, a sarcastic essay that has become a classic on journalistic schools about his work in the 'front lines'.
